My work focuses on the ecology of marine predators.

I look at how the biophysical oceanographic environment influences the behaviour and distribution of marine predators and how we can model and forecast these aspects of their ecology in our changing seascapes. I am beginning to explore the applied and broader implications of this work – how do we use this information about marine predators for conservation, management and to understand broader ecosystem pattern, process and status? To do this I use data from technologies including animal biologging and remote-sensing, which I analyse with modern, highly quantitative tools like machine learning. Geographically, I focus on the Southern Ocean (Antarctic and Subantarctic).

I’m currently based in the Bio-Telemetry and Behavioral Ecology Lab at the Institute of Marine SciencesUniversity of California Santa Cruz.
